Towards a structure-based typology
Hubert Haider
February 2021

Word order typologies must be grounded on syntactic properties rather than serialization patterns, otherwise languages with different alignment systems will be typologically misidentified. Second, the S-V-O linearization is a highly unreliable marker for the identification of the “SVO” type. Third, type profiling must take into account the structural organization of the major lexical phrases of a given language. In particular, [S[VO]] languages, with rigid word order and head-initial verb positioning must not be conflated with languages in which S-V-O merely is a serialization option promoted by non-syntactic ordering preferences operating on a syntactically variable word order.
