On parasitic gaps in relative clauses and the nature of extraction from nominal phrases

Much research argues that cyclic spell-out at each phase gives rise to the cyclicity and locality of syntactic operations. The commonly assumed set of phases is vP, CP, and sometimes DP. Several works argue that the NP is a phase as well. In this paper, I argue that the little-studied possibility of parasitic gaps in relative clauses provides unnoticed evidence for successive-cyclic movement from NP, which we expect if NP is a phase. I argue that this finding is supported by several lines of evidence and has interesting implications for theories about the locality of extraction from NP/DP.
