Formalism and, not vs, Functionalism
Zeljko Boskovic
May 2022

The paper re-examines the generative vs functional perspective division in the field, arguing for a unificational view where both of these approaches have a place, i.e. where they are in principle not in competition with each other, with typology setting grounds for a rapprochement between the two traditions. To this end, it is shown that many of what are assumed to be clear demarcation lines between the traditional generativist and the traditional functionalist/typological camp are not clear, in fact may not be there at all. The paper also discusses several points of convergence between the two traditions.
