How to Generate Adjuncts by MERGE
Takanori Nakashima
May 2022

This paper argues that Pair-Merge is eliminable, demonstrating that adjunction is a subcase of MERGE (Chomsky, Ott, and Gallego 2019; Chomsky 2019, 2020) that maps a workspace onto another workspace. This proposal accounts for the invisibility of adjuncts with respect to extraction, labeling, theta-relation, and binding. If this proposal is on the right track, adjunction, as well as hierarchical structure and displacement, is a consequence of MERGE, the single operation attributed to UG.
