Maximal feature specification is feasible; minimal feature specification is not

We defend three heresies: 1) Phonological rules are not minimally specified. Rather they are specified using the maximal set of features consistent with the data. 2) Children are not little scientists; acquiring a grammar is qualitatively different than developing a scientific theory. 3) There’s no such thing as assimilation.
