Che cazzo di articolo di merda!

This paper focuses on a few unexpected morphosyntactic properties of some expressive structures in Italian. These structures involve lexical items such as cazzo ‘dick’ and merda ‘shit’, which can occur in a so-called binominal N-of-N construction. An influential analysis of the binominal N-of-N construction takes the Expressive Noun (ExprN) to be an underlying predicate. In this paper, we show that certain empirical properties of cazzo class of ExprNs do not follow from this analysis, suggesting that, at least for this class of ExprNs, the predicate analysis is incorrect.
