Mendes and Kandybowicz (2023) argued that Nupe perfect island violations are repaired by ellipsis. The authors empirically rejected several alternative analyses which do not resort to repair: pseudosluicing, non-deletion (LF copying/deep anaphora), non-movement (non-constituent deletion), and resumption. Not considered by Mendes and Kandybowicz was an alternative non-repair analysis involving aspectual mismatch. In this snippet, we argue against an aspectual mismatch alternative on empirical grounds, concluding that the opacity of Nupe perfect vPs is not the result of narrow syntactic constraints, but rather PF representation constraints that can be voided under ellipsis, as claimed by Mendes and Kandybowicz (2023).
