In this short paper, we address a problem (originally pointed out by Gärtner 1998) that remnant movement poses for the theory of chain reduction (Nunes 1995). We briefly discuss previous approaches to the problem (Nunes 2004, Collins and Stabler 2016), pointing out some of their weaknesses. We then propose that the problem may receive a more satisfactory solution in terms of a (elaborated) theory of cyclic spell-out (Bresnan 1971, Epstein et al. 1998, Uriagereka 1999).
